continuing over towards 270. southbound 270, delays from 85 extended to father hurley boulevard. 33-minute trip. then easy from germantown headed to the split. no problems on the beltway between springfield and gallows. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. thanks. we begin with breaking news from northern virginia. a suspect was killed early this morning by sheriff's deputies. happened around 4:00 this morning right near the stafford county line. authorities tell fox 5 the incident began as a dui investigation. but it escalated to some sort of altercation between the deputy and the suspect that led to that shooting. the death toll from sandy keeps rising. the storm is now blamed for killing at least 90 people in the u.s. meanwhile, frustration keeps mounting in the big apple and new jersey. millions still have no power and food and clean water are in

short supply. traffic is a nightmare with miles long backups near every bridge and long waits and big crowds for buses and subways. tempers are flaring over long gas station lines. new york mayor bloomberg says the city is sending bottled water and ready to eat meals in some areas. our area is also sending aid up north. >> in about 30 minutes dominion virginia power will deploy more than 70 trucks and more than 1,000 workers to help new jersey with their cleanup and recovery efforts. >> sherri ly is live at their staging grounds at national harbor with more on this. good morning, sherri. >> reporter: good morning, tony, good morning, allison. this is the largest deployment ever by dominion virginia to send eight to another area out of state. you can see here they've already got their crews, their trucks here. they have line crews

underground line crews already helping to restore power in lower manhattan. now this contingent here will be leaving for areas in new jersey. dominion is sending 1500 workers along with 200 to 250 bucket trucks. some will be departing at 7:30 this morning from national harbor headed to new jersey. millions in the northeast remain without power after sandy caused widespread destruction. >> these guys put wires back up. that's what they do, and they're good at it. they'll be going into neighborhoods and replacing poles and cross arms and wires and restoring lights for the customers. they really -- they do that well. >> we're planning to be totally self-sufficient when we get there. we have trailers that we'll have lodging, our own catering, so first energy, the company

we'll be assisting, does not have to worry about us, except to give us the orders so we can help them get power back on. >> reporter: all of these crews have been working 12-hour shifts for dominion here in virginia since on sunday. now, they have been restoring the power here. dominion was able to get the power back on for more than 200,000 customers hit by sandy. that allowed them to free up people to head up to new york and new jersey and given the extensive damage there, they are planning, or expecting those crews to be up there as long as two weeks to get all that power back on. that's the latest here at national harbor. back to you. >> sherri, thank you so much. fox's jennifer davis joins now. she is in ocean city, new jersey this morning. jennifer has a look at the conditions on the hard hit coast, four days later. good morning to you, jennifer. >> reporter: good morning,

allison. after four days they still can't get around a number of the streets here in ocean city. these are more streets that were swallowed up by sea water. they are packed with several inches of this dense wet sand. it's been very difficult to clear, even though you can tell they made some headway. that way it looks really bad. they still don't have power around here in a number of places. schools are closed. there's so much debris and damage to deal with. here and up and down the jersey coast it's not just about the physical damage, but the emotional toll. the massive damage left behind from the storm has some homeowners breaking down in tears. >> i just spent $30,000 getting my home repaired and it's all gone. >> 22 years i've been in my home. [crying] >> reporter: others say they have nothing left and no place to go. >> we have nothing. no credit cards, nothing in our bank accounts.

fifteen dollars in my pocket. nowhere to go. no electricity. no food, no gas. >> reporter: staten island, new york, the bodies of two boys found. rushing waters pulled the 2 and 4-year-old boys away from their mother. >> god, i would be devastated. what would you do? i would die. i would want to be dead with them. i can't believe it. i can't believe this is happening. >> reporter: the destruction across several eastern states is a sight that many are still struggling to come to terms with. >> you see it on tv when it's happening elsewhere, and you say, my god, you say prayers for them. now we're saying, oh, my god, we're praying for us. >> reporter: now, a jogger making his way here through this street, which is not easy to do, because there's so much that's on the roads here. gas is also a big problem here in new jersey. they estimate 60% of gas stations either don't have power or don't have gasoline. tempers have flared as people

wait for hours and backups that stretch for miles to try and either fill up the tank or their generator. some fist fights have broken out and police have been called in to restore order. jennifer davis, fox news. >> i would imagine frustrations running high. thank you so much. meanwhile, controversy growing over the decision to move ahead with this weekend's new york city marathon. mayor bloomberg says the race will not take away resources needed for storm relief. organizers plan to use ferries to transport runners to the starting line on staten island. some critics say the city's focus should be on helping victims. sandy's impact on the presidential election is still unclear. but the damage and destruction won't stop voters in the garden state from casting ballots. officials say they will deploy military trucks to serve as polling places on tuesday.

they're extending the deadline for mail in ballots. with only four days left in the nine stretch of the race, the candidates are back on the campaign trail today. president obama has three stops in the battleground state of ohio. and tomorrow the president comes back to virginia on stage in manassas with bill clinton and rocker dave matthews. yesterday mr. obama picked up the endorsement of new york he campaigned in wisconsin, nevada and colorado. meanwhile, republican nominee mitt romney starts the day with a campaign rally in wisconsin, and then heads to ohio for two more campaign events. he'll join his wife ann and running mate paul ryan in ohio. in 90 minutes. the labor department will release the october unemployment report. economists say about 121,000 jobs were added.

it would likely raise the rate slightly from 7.8% to 7.9% last month. kwame brown could serve just six days when prison when sentenced november 13th. that's the recommendation prosecutors released yesterday. the former d.c. council chairman pleaded guilty in june to corruption charges. prosecutors admit his crime was serious but say brown deserves credit for accepting responsibility and cooperating. a prince george's police officer will be in court for a bond hearing today, a day after being indicted on an attempted murder charge. prosecutors say sergeant johnnie riley shot and wounded calvin kyle after kyle climbed out of a police cruiser and tried to run away. kyle was in handcuffs at the time. it happened along county road in september after riley pulled kyle over for speeding on a stolen motorcycle. kyle is now paralyzed from the

welcome back. we're following breaking news out of northeast d.c. fox 5 has confirmed one person has been shot, another person stabbed. this happened in the 3500 block of 17th street. it happened just before 7:00 this morning, so just a couple of moments ago. we don't know the extent of the injuries and we'll bring you updates to this story as they come into the newsroom. the fda says contamination has been found in more drugs made by the new england compounding center. that's the company linked to the deadly meningitis outbreak. the significance of the latest findings is not yet known. 28 people have died and more than 300 people sickened after receiving tainted steroid

have an idea. let's talk first of all about president obama's chances. couple of months ago, let's say three, four months ago, it really looked like this was his to lose. and now there are some indications that he may lose. what do you attribute that to? >> first of all, i think you expect these things to narrow in a closely divided country. the economy has recovered at a slow rate, but has recovered and i think that's been a lot of the factor. do people feel like we've recovered enough to give the president a chance to keep building on that or try a different route? enough of the midwestern states, that probably will be decisive. but the one poll that matters is on election day. the reality is, depends on who shows up and votes. >> absolutely, this will be a nail biter. i think the turning point was october 3rd in the first presidential debate when mitt romney came out and showed he was a principle but practical

candidate for president. since that point basically the obama strategy, which was to hit mitt, tear him down and say he wasn't who he said he was, and the voters saw the essential practical and he started rising in the polls. he said i want to work across party lines and that's really the point now. >> let's talk about, though, if the -- whoever wins, if congress still is not -- if congress is controlled and the senate is controlled by the party that doesn't represent the president, are we still going to have that bitterness, that rivalry, that people not getting along and not getting anything done? ford i'll start with you. >> we need to come together to fix our problems and i think one of the big things that was noted that voters are taking into account is who can work better with congress. the latest ap poll says mitt romney is better positioned to

do that. again, whoever wins the white house will have a tough task ahead of them. >> it is. i don't think we'll get rid of the bitterness, but that doesn't mean we won't get something done. the stakes are high with the fiscal cliff, the tax side, the revenue side, a whole lot of things. so this is going to be a moment for statesmanship and i think in a way, while i think the president will win in the end, it will be close, and as was mentioned by mr. o'connell, the transition happened when romney went from more an extreme conservativist position to the middle. i think it's something members in congress should take note of, americans will award those coming to the middle in trying solve a problem. i believe the president will win, and i believe the senate will remain in the democratic hands and the house the republican, and as people come together, i think it should be a recognition that they want folks to come together and solve these problems. i think the president has tried to make his case he's ready to

do that. >> ford looks anxious. >> i don't think the president will win, but i think it will be close, and the question really is who will win ohio. we may not know because of november 17th. i think locally mitt romney will win virginia, and if he wins virginia, florida, ohio, colorado or new hampshire, he'll be the next president. i think the president at this moment has a little bit better chance in the electoral college. >> i can't offer to shave my mustache when we win ohio, but i think that will happen. but i think in virginia you'll get a close race, one way or the other. i think you've seen tim kaine pull away from allen and made the case for himself as tough decisions he's had to make as governor. that will be a key senate race to watch, not just for where the commonwealth goes, but could control the senate. i think that's trending in a good direction for tim kaine. >> let me get your thoughts as

well, looks like if you look at the poll numbers, kaine has pulled ahead of allen. do you think he has a shot? >> if obama wins virginia two or 3-points lease likely to -- he's likely to drag mr. allen across. allens a polls say he's up one. i think this will be a nail biter race like the presidential race. i think it could be a possible split. if there was a split in the vote, i think the better vote would be romney/kaine. >> people want to believe that you want the job. i think that was one of the problems the president faced in the first debate. came in strong in the subsequent debates. i think there's been some concern about how committed george allen is to wanting this job. whereas kaine has been out there working hard, including in very red parts of the state, talking about how as governor

he was able to work with republicans in the legislature. will be down to the wire. >> for those watching at home, really the key i think is to watch prince williams county. whichever candidate has won that county has gone on to win. >> yeah. i would say the one stat to look at in virginia is the gender gap. i think if mitt romney is able to close what was a gap in virginia, i think that's his best chance if he can't close that gap, i think we'll see the president win. >> i think at the same time the president has to close the male gap as well. both candidates are struggling, president obama is doing a little bit better with female voters and mitt romney is doing better with male voters. >> we have about 30 seconds left. but i want to talk about the gender gap quickly. why do you think romney has made better strides in terms of closing that gap recently? >> again, you expect some of these things to close, but he hasn't been able to stand up to the more extreme views in his

inbound 50 on the brakes from 410. police investigation in northeast washington tying up a portion of 17th street, rhode island avenue. no one is able to get by there. ongoing investigation along new jersey avenue between h and massachusetts avenue. two separate incidents, both under investigation. no one getting by at this time. inbound 50 is tied up with a delay, leaving 410 to new york kenilworth avenue, average speed 16 miles per hour trying to get out of cheverly. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. thanks, julie. breaking news, two police involved shootings in our area. one in which the suspect died, the other where an officer has been hurt.

>> let's start with that case. it's happening in northeast d.c. in the 3500 block of 17th street. a d.c. police officer was stabbed and a suspect shot. this occurred just before 7:00 this morning. we don't know the conditions of either the officer or the suspect at this time. meantime, in northern virginia, an investigation is underway into what led a fauquier county sheriff's deputy to shoot and kill a man. happened around 4:00 a.m. near the stafford fauquier county line. they chased the suspect, who they say has a knife. he was shot. investigators say when he attacked one of the deputies. the death toll from sandy keeps rising. the storm is now blamed for killing at least 94 people in the u.s., including two young brothers swept from their mother's arms by flood waters. meanwhile, frustration keeps mounting in the big apple and

new jersey. millions have no power and food and clean water are short supply. traffic is a nightmare with miles long backups near every bridge and long waits and big crowds for buses and subways. tempers are flaring over long gas station lines. new york mayor bloomberg says the city is sending bottled water and ready to eat meals in some of the hardest hit areas. dominion virginia power is deploying crews and trucks to help with recovery efforts. sherri ly is live at national harbor where crews are on their way out. >> reporter: the first contingent of trucks pulled out of here a few minutes ago. you can see the rest of the crews here still gearing up. they'll be leaving in waves actually headed to new jersey, where help is desperately needed to restore power to millions of people. dominion is sending 1500

people. these are linemen, tree trimmers and other workers needed to get the power back on. they're headed to a staging area in lakewood, new jersey first, between 200 and 250 bucket trucks. sandy made landfall in new jersey four days ago, causing devastation. the crews will be self- sufficient. they'll have their own trailers to sleep in and all the food and water they need. these crews have been working 12-hour shifts since sunday to restore power here, and now they're headed to new jersey to help those hardest hit. >> they help with restoration in our dominion service area, and now they'll be working up there, we anticipate they could be there as long as two weeks, but let's hope not. >> a lot of pride in what these guys do. when the lights come on and the neighborhood cheers, they really like it. >> reporter: dominion already has underground line crews in new york helping to restore

power in lower manhattan. they sent tree trimmers earlier this week to the northeast. it is the largest mobilezation effort ever for dominion to send crews to help out of state. i talked to one lineman earlier today and he says it's tough to be away from your family for so long. but when you get to these areas and see what they're going through, the devastation, how long they've been without power, you think about those people and the food you're doing. that's the latest in national harbor, back to you. >> sherri, thank you very much. the timing could not be worse, but forecasters say the weather wary east coast could see another storm next week. it would not be another hurricane sandy situation and it's still too soon to tell. but it could include snow in new england and high winds snare owes hit hard by sandy. sandy's impact on the election is unclear, but it

won't stop voters in the garden state. officials say they'll deploy military trucks to serve as polling places tuesday. they are also extending the deadline for mail-in ballots. only a few days until americans do head to the polls. and president obama is back on the campaign trail after a pause for sandy. after campaigning in wisconsin, nevada, colorado yesterday, he has three stops in battleground ohio today. tomorrow the president will appear in manassas with bill clinton and singer dave matthews. yesterday's new york mayor michael bloomberg on yesterday endorsed president obama. mitt romney starts the day with a rally in wisconsin and heads to ohio for two more campaign events. he'll join his wife and running mate paul ryan for a rally tonight in westchester, ohio. tony? allison, another election curve ball comes out today, in

about 30 minutes the labor department will release the october unemployment report. economists say the nation likely added about 120,000 jobs reflecting a steady, but cautious approach. that would raise the rate slightly from 7.8 #% in september to 7.9% last month. new this morning, a prince george's county delegate will not keep her seat in the maryland state house. that is the finding of an attorney for the general assembly. the "washington post" says tiffany alston will not be reinstated following her conviction on charges she took state money to pay a private employee. county democrats will pick her replacement today. kwame brown could serve just six days in prison when he is sentenced november 13th. that is the recommendation the prosecutors released yesterday.

prosecutors admit the crime was serious, but say brown receives credit for accepting responsibility. prince george's county police officer will be in court for a bond hearing today. one day after being indicted on an attempted murder charge. prosecutors say sergeant johnnie riley shot and wounded kalvin kyle after kyle climbed out of a police cruiser and tried to run away. kyle was in handcuffs at the time. this happened along county road in september after riley pulled over kyle for speeding on a stolen motorcycle. kyle is now paralyzed from the waist down. the nationwide manhunt for a virginia man accused of trying to kill his ex- girlfriend and two police officers using pipe bombs has ended in montana. 25-year-old laurence alan stewart ii was caught after a brief police chase. stewart threw a pipe bomb at them during the pursuit. officers deflated his tires using spike strips. he was initially pulled over for speeding. he'll be extradited back to virginia to face several

we're getting our first live pictures from the scene of a deadly police involved shooting in the district. an officer was stabbed by a suspect before he shot the man. that suspect has now been pronounced dead. this happened just before 7:00 this morning in the 3500 block of 17th street northeast. we still do not know the condition of the police officer. making headlines in the day ahead, an arraignment hearing for two top penn state administrators. prosecutors say the two covered up allegations against jerry sandusky. it comes a day curly and shultz and the former president spannier were indicted for their role in the scandal. the ipad mini goes on sale

the staff, and general manager done an awesome job. >> first time in the playoffs in five years. your team will earn second seed, which normally would give you home team advantage, but unfortunately with the hurricane, what's going to happen here? >> we worked very hard to get home field advantage and we think it's important. but ultimately, there are bigger issues at stake here. the devastation in new jersey really made it impossible for the red bulls to host a game tonight. so in consultation with them, and with the league, we agreed though give up our home field advantage and it's significant in our league and play the match tonight at rfk, and the wednesday match next week will be played, we hope, at red bull. >> i guess for people that don't follow soccer, the tie breaker might be played up there? >> right. the easiest way to explain it, think of our two games as each is a half of a game, so at the

end of the two games, aggregate score determines the winner. if it's tied at the end of regulation of the second game, then we go into a mini game, and penalty kick. you want that at home. >> it's a two game playoff and our game is tomorrow night at rfk. what can we expect? doing the blackout? >> yes. the blackout is back. the blackout has always worked for us in the past. the game is at 8:00. people who might have had tickets for the wednesday game, they'll work tomorrow night. we are telling people, if they can't come tomorrow night, already bought a ticket for wednesday, they'll get their money back. we're expecting a sell out of the lower bowl in the mezzanine section. >> if people are interested, still tickets available? >> there are tickets available now. they're going pretty fast. but there are still some good seats available. we encourage people to try to act today if they want to come tomorrow night. >> looking at the long-term future, i've been a big follower since the team got started in the '90s.

i remember going to the games. great history there. i've noticed the last couple of years many teams getting their own stadium. are we getting closer here in washington? >> we are. you shared with me you were at the '97 championship game, the largest crowd in history for anything at the rfk stadium. we've had conversations with the mayor's office and key council members and think we are closer than we've ever been. touch wood, the mayor is coming tomorrow night. we'll be happy to see him there. we're confident something will get done and we'll have the right kind of home in d.c. >> and helps to have a winning team, and with a young team, looks like we have the foundation for several years of success. and ben olson is a local favorite. we love having him as coach. looking forward to many years of success. >> we hope so. we're going to work hard at it. >> everybody come out tomorrow night, support your home team. wear the colors and keep our fingers crossed, we need a big win tomorrow night, and we can

october unemployment report just came into the newsroom, and it shows employers added 171,000 jobs last month the the expectation had been about 121,000. however, still, that's not enough to keep pace with the growing economy. so the unemployment rate actually went up to 7.9% from 7.8%. this is the labor department's last look at hiring before tuesday's election. president obama will face voters with the highest unemployment rate of any
